During his spiritual journeys, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was accompanied by two dedicated individuals. Bhai Bala, a Hindu and Bhai Mardana, a Muslim. Although both came from differing backgrounds, by serving Guru Nanak Dev Ji together, they successfully demonstrated that different faiths can work together to achieve a common goal.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji also taught that meditation was more effective when practiced as part of a group (Sangat) rather than in isolation. He demonstrated this personally by meditating with Bhai Bala and Bhai Mardana and in doing so encouraged their small Sangat to share knowledge, learn and develop together.
